I am working with Professor Donna Kacmar on her third book, titled Big Little Hotel, to be published by Routledge in 2023. Kacmar is researching how the histories of hotels are intertwined with changing economies, social revolutions, and advancing technology. I am working with her to visually show how materials, light, accommodation of the act of travel, and connections to the local context are being incorporated in several new hotels designed by architects. The timeline on this poster illustrates the relationship between developments in hotel accommodation and advancements in the American landscape. It charts milestones in hotels and hotel technology, alongside factors that contribute to the growth of that industry. The development of faster transportation and increased tourist destinations in the United States created greater demand for traveler accommodations throughout the past two centuries.
