A list of some of the vertebrates of Harris County, Texas

Lists of the vertebrate animals of Harris County, Texas, exclusive of the fish, birds, and marine mammals have been presented. These lists were compiled from published records, collections, and personal field work. Each species has been recorded systematically and an accession reference given. The knowledge that it would be highly improbable to make complete lists prompted the use of hypothetical lists. These hypothetical lists are based on ranges, given by authorities, which indicate a close approach to or include Harris County, Texas. Some animals have been listed as extinct for the Harris County area. These animals have been recorded in old literature, but are not known in the area today. Harris County, Texas was chosen for this work on the basis of the terrain, locality, and the need for such a work. A general discussion of the terrain, physical dimensions, climate, history, and industries has been included.
