Item Assigned Primary Nurses: Effects on Maternal Depression in the NICU(2023-08-05) Flamiano, Mavi-Anne; Goode, Jacey; Hall, Raelee; Mason, Kate; Munoz, TiffanyMaternal depression has been recognized as a prevalent issue in NICU mothers. Many parents are dissatisfied with constant staffing changes and lack of communication and collaboration from NICU nurses (Brødsgaard et al., 2019). Primary nursing supports families by providing continuity of care and facilitates the development of a stronger bond between the family and the primary nurse, enhancing communication and increasing the family's sense of ease and reassurance (Umberger et al., 2018). Therefore, implementing a primary nurse within the NICU provides emotional support and comfort, lowering the risk of maternal depression.Item The Benefits of an HPV Vaccination Education Program on Improving HPV Vaccination Rates(2022) Staley, Allison; Thoede, Kristalyn; Huerta, MollyIn adolescents ages 9-18 what is the effect of an HPV vaccination education program on improving HPV vaccine series completion rate compared to those who do not receive the education? The purpose of this research is to prove that an increase in HPV knowledge will lead to an increase in HPV vaccination completion rates.Item Breast Milk Versus Formula Feeding's Influence on Length of Stay for Patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(2022-07-29) Omwoyo, Sydney; Vecera, Celeste; Williams, CalliePrematurity in infants directly influences perinatal mortality and childhood disability, which affects nearly 15 million babies each year. Premature infants born at less than 30 weeks gestation will also have a 20x increased risk of developing necrotizing enterocolitis if they are exclusively formula-fed. Exclusively breast-fed infants have a decreased likelihood of developing infections such as necrotizing enterocolitis and sepsis, thus resulting in a decreased stay of the neonate in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.Item Building Confidence in Nurses to Detect and Take Action Against Human Trafficking (HT) Amongst Pediatric Patients(2022) Pham, Kaitlyn; Boyce, Kathleen; Chang, PeterHuman trafficking is a prevalent problem in America, and the average age of a human trafficking victim is 15.1 A total of 88% of sex trafficking victims have been in contact with a health care worker while being trafficked.2 The need for a clear, concise, and well-rounded human trafficking training program, specifically for pediatric nurses is evident. Numerous studies have been done to show the necessity for a more universal training program.4 Multiple studies have shown that by providing a thorough human trafficking training program, where the instructors provide a more trauma approach style with real case scenarios can give nurses the confidence to quickly identify these young victims.Item Does position matter? A study of maternal outcomes in different birthing positions(2021-08-03) Ramey, Casey; Royston, Courtney; Thayil, SarathThis poster explored the effects of upright birthing positions on maternal outcomes such as the length of labor, the pelvic outlet dimension, the rate of assisted deliveries, and the rate of episiotomies. We identified that there was a decrease in the length of the first and second stages of labor, the rate of assisted deliveries, and the rate of episiotomies. There was also an increase in the pelvic outlet dimension. Nurses should educate low risk mothers about different birthing positions.Item The Effect of a Respite Room on the Severity of Secondary Traumatic Stress in Pediatric Oncology Nurses(2022) Rubio, Vanessa; Aslam, Mahwash; Sosa, KarlaThe stress that pediatric oncology nurses endure leads to compassion fatigue which in turn leads to poor retention rates, increasing the workload of remaining nurses which then continues the cycle. Three components of compassion fatigue include secondary traumatic stress, compassion satisfaction, and burnout. Research has found a significant negative relationship between compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue while a strong positive relationship was observed between compassion fatigue and burnout. The use of a respite room is deemed to be effective against compassion fatigue amongst pediatric oncology nurses.Item The Effect of Antimicrobial Prophylaxis for Patients Undergoing Total Joint Arthroplasty(2021-07-23) Khong, Anny; Guico, Melanie; Delicana, Adryl, Jr.For patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty, does the use of a more targeted antimicrobial prophylaxis approach reduce the future risk of surgical site infection compared with current practice of sole administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics?Item The Effect of Breastfeeding on Postpartum Hypertension(2022) Saulter, Imani; Bonner, KaylenThe focus of this presentation is to determine whether there are positive health outcomes for mothers over the age of 40 who have breastfed. Research has shown that longer durations of lactation can reduce hypertension in mothers. It is recommended to educate and encourage breastfeeding for up to 12 months to improve cardiovascular health of postpartum women.Item The Effect of Gender-Affirming Care on Depression in Adolescents(2023-08-05) Chen, Shao; Cano, Erin; Curtom, Ingrid; Cotton, BreannaGender-affirming care in adolescents has been rising in discussion over the past few years as many children take part in care such as utilizing desired pronouns, participating in psychological services, hormone therapy, social affirmation, and surgeries. Adolescence is a critical period for gender identity development, and access to gender-affirming care can positively impact the well-being and mental health of transgender and gender-diverse youth. Less than 25% of transgender and gender-diverse youth feel they can fully express themselves at home or school, and 72% report negative comments about LGBTQ individuals from their family members.¹ This demonstrates the need for interventions that provide support and acceptance. Research shows that adolescents who have access to and take part in gender-affirming care experience lower levels of depression.Item The Effect of Mindfulness-Based Interventions on the Stress Experienced by Emergency Department Nurses(2022-07-29) Bell, Rebecca; Glebus, Bianca; Moballegh, AliEmergency room nurses experience high levels of stress. The high levels of stress can lead to nurse burnout and high turnover rates. Interventions to reduce ER nurse stress include organizational-directed interventions and individual-focused interventions. Individual focused interventions are further divided into mindfulness-based interventions and education interventions. Implementing Mindfulness-Based training workshops increase the nurse's ability to cope and improve well-being.Item The Effect of Operating Room Distractions on Total Surgical Time(2021) Harris, Ki'Asha; George, Jasmine; Vo, TamIn surgical patients, what is the effect of surgical room distractions on total surgery time compared with the absence of distractions?Item The Effect of Primary Care Providers (PCP) on Avoidable Emergency Room Visits in Underserved Patients with Type II Diabetes(2021-07-29) Coffman, Michala; Osei, Chelsea; Pelaez, DianaDiabetic patients in underserved communities can benefit from establishing a relationship with a PCP to manage diabetes and prevent avoidable emergency room visits. Collaborative care programs can be used to increase access to primary care providers in patients with diabetes who live in underserved communities (Carter et al., 2016; Chwastiak et al., 2017; Karter et al., 2017; Soto Mas et al., 2019). Emergency room nurses can collaborate with hospital administrators and community leaders to provide access to resources such as education on diabetes management.Item Effect of Provider-In-Triage Model on Emergency Department Efficacy(2021-07) Flores, Kristen; Rodriguez, Cristin; Walker, JenniferAccording to The Joint Commission (2019), appropriately managing the time a patient stays in the Emergency Department (ED) waiting room could affect the safety and quality of patient care. The Joint Commission published a standard (LD.04.03.11), which outlines the responsibilities of the hospital in managing patient flow through the ED. Various models of flow thorough the ED have been developed each with the goal of optimizing patient throughput for various outcome measures. Traditionally, ED models involved a nurse independently triaging patients and prioritizing highest acuity being seen first, termed nurse lead triage. Other models, such as provider in triage and split flow have emerged that may lend to further optimization of patient flow by redesigning the flow of patients through the ED and reconfiguring the triage team.Item The Effect of Social Support on Medication Adherence in Patients that Require a Long-Term Medication Regimen(2021-07-27) Nguyen, Linda; Rashid, Arifa; Madatharavila, JoyceIn patients that require long-term medication regimen, what is the effect of social support on medication adherence compared to those that do not have social support?Item The Effect of Virtual Counseling Services Regarding Burnout Amongst NICU Nurses(2022-07-30) Rodriguez, Elizabeth; Sauceda, Alyssa; Yau, JennaIn nurses within the neonatal intensive care unit, what is the effect of bi-weekly virtual counseling services on burnout compared with current practices within a 3-month period?Item The Effect of Wearable Electronic Hand Washing Monitoring Systems on ICU Patients with Clostridium difficile Infections(2022-08-01) Wyatt, James; Brooks, Gabrielle; Puglisi, MeganIn this presentation, the effectiveness of electronic hand washing badges on hand hygiene is compared to compliance rates with secret shopping methods. Clostridium difficile rates have been increasing in numbers and account for a large portion of hospital-acquired infections in the ICU. Electronic hand washing badges have shown to be effective at reducing the incidence of Clostridium difficle in intensive care units (ICU) after their implementation.Item The Effect of Wearable Sensors on the Incidence of Pressure Ulcers in ICU Patients(2021-07-29) Pennington, Catie; Burke, Callie; Garza, AngelICU patients have severely impaired mobility due to the severity of their condition and medical equipment. Research has shown that turning patients routinely decreases the incidence of pressure ulcers. Wearable patient sensors placed on patients at admission have been found to better hold nurses more accountable to reposition patients adequately. Therefore, this device better prevents pressure ulcers during the duration of an ICU patient’s stay.Item Effectiveness of a Mediterranean Diet on Wound Healing(2021) Tran, Tommy; Chung, Elizabeth; Nguyen, DannyNutrition is often overlooked when it comes to wound healing. We examine the positive impact of implementing a Mediterranean diet plan for patients that suffer from thermal wounds on the rate of skin healing.Item The effectiveness of a postpartum hemorrhage crash course on decreasing the incidence of postpartum hemorrhage amongst different ethnic groups(2021) Gloria, Edith; Moreno, Luis; Vallery, AralyIn African-American and Hispanic women who have preeclampsia, what is the effect of postpartum hemorrhage risk factor education on postpartum hemorrhage prevalence for that group compared with non-Hispanic white women with preeclampsia who are not educated in that regard?Item The Effectiveness of Avagard Over Traditional Hand Scrubbing in Preventing Surgical Site Infections(2022-07-29) Ellis, Jenna; Canales, Shelby; Leedy, LaurenMultiple studies have been conducted and have found that Avagard (anti-septic hand scrub) is more effective and efficient than traditional hand scrub in preventing surgical site infections. Surgical site infections have been found to be the most common and costly hospital acquired infections. We used the ASEPSIS scoring tool in order to assess the surgical site for signs on infection. Throughout the poster, it describes the key findings, evaluation of results and a background on the topic.
