dc.description.abstractA study was made using wave height data collected during hurricane Camille. The objectives were to (1) study the changing shape of the frequency spectrum during approach and passage of a hurricane, (2) compare parameters whose values are calculated from the spectrum area to those determined directly from wave staff data, and (3) compare the results of the several methods of calculating significant wave height with those heights determined from storm data. It was determined that the frequency spectrum is sometimes characterized by a peak of energy concentration at more than one frequency. However, comparison of the statistical parameter calculations based on spectrum area with those parameters calculated from the data gathered reveal that the values vary in a random manner but can be used as a guideline for sea states. It was determined also that the sea wave height population distribution closely adheres to a Rayleigh cumulative distribution probability curve during normal sea states. However, during storm conditions the cumulative distribution probability curve of the wave heights is skewed in such a manner to show there exist a greater number of higher waves than would be predicted.
