Abstract

When a temperature gradient is impressed upon a dilute polyatomic gas, a polarization occurs in the molecular velocity space, angular momentum space, and in spaces composed of their various combinations. The temperature dependence of two such polarizations is experimentally obtained in this work in terms of their corresponding collision cross sections; σ(1200/1200) and σ(1001/1200). This is accomplished by studying the effect of strong and uniform magnetic fields on the thermal conductivity of N2, CO, CH4 and NO over the temperature range of 79°K to 309°K. [...]
