The ordinal theory of number development as recently advanced by Dr. Charles Brainerd maintains, in brief, the following proposels: (1) proposals about the develpment of ordinal number concepts, (2) proposals about the develpment of cardinal number concepts, and (3) proposals about the developmental relationships between ordinal number, cardinal number, and arithmentic (natural number) concepts. This study concerns itself with one phase of the ordinal theory; That of perceived cardinality, and three additional factors, time, real and abstract representations, and counting (rote and rational).
