A set of ideal filter characteristics is proposed. Active and passive filters are compared with each other with respect to this list. Features of some passive filter design tables are presented. Using these goals, an active filter realization approach is chosen and a set of low pass active one and two pole sections is developed. The approximation problem is discussed and a set of computer-generated, normalized, low pass, active filter tables developed from this study is referred to in the Appendix. Circuits for use with the tables are presented. A step-by-step procedure for using the tables is developed and illustrated by examples. Methods are shown for denormalization with respect to the circuit elements and the cutoff frequency. A transformation to high pass is developed and illustrated by complete design examples.
