Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to present a plan for building a workable guidance program in the Brownsville High School which will, provide counseling and other guidance services for every pupil enrolled. Three problems, peculiar to Brownsville, Texas, were taken into consideration in planning the proposed program of guidance. These problems are the high percentage of Latin American students, the phenomenal growth in population, and the adverse attitude toward counseling. Present practices and facilities were examined in the light of the basic elements of guidance as given by Erickson and Smith and the proposed plan built from this foundation. It was assumed that if guidance programs. Incorporating the established basic principles of guidance, have been effective in other schools, a plan of guidance incorporating the same principles would be effective in the Brownsville situation.
