dc.description.abstract | An acoustic transmitter and receiver subsystem of a Doppler wind and wind shear monitor has been analyzed against an objective of maximizing sensitivity and range while maintaining system reliability and weather resistance for long term remote operation at airports. A system equation is derived to evaluate the performance objectives. Criteria for analysis of the transmitting and receiving elements are developed. Acoustical transmitting and receiving transducers which are candidates for use in the system are examined in detail. Couplers are studied for impedance transforming properties which improve the transducer performance as appropriate. Devices and techniques for forming ideal beampatterns are treated with emphasis on plane arrays. Shielding by barriers is discussed. A general system configuration is determined with suggestions for future work. | |
