dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the history of the public schools of Houston from 1836-1965, with a view to determining (1) changes in the size of land area and population of the community served by the schools, (2) administrative structure of the school system, (3) development of the school curriculum, and (4) financial support for the public schools during each of the six definable eras of development, viz., Pre-Public School era, 1836-1876; The Formative Period, 1876-1900; Establishment of the Independent School District, 1900-1923; Adjustment to Change, 1923-1940; Decade of Challenge, 1940-1950; Period Prior to Academic Acceleration, 1950-1958; and The Emergent Era and Discernible Trends, 1958-1965. Data for this study were abstracted from official board minutes of the public schools of Houston, annual reports of the Houston Public Schools, financial statements of the Houston Independent School District, superintendent's annual report to the state superintendent of public instruction, superintendent's annual report to the state commissioner of education—Texas Education Agency, curriculum bulletins, school surveys, and similar related materials concerning the public schools of Houston. Other data were obtained from unpublished materials, newspapers, books, and personal interviews. [...]
