Sharing Stories from 1977: The National Women's Conference

In November 1977, approximately 2,000 delegates of diverse backgrounds from the fifty states and trust territories, as well as up to 20,000 attendees, gathered in Houston, Texas for the National Women's Conference (NWC), with the goal of amplifying the needs of American women. Even though this was the first and only federally funded women's conference, it has largely faded from national memory. The “Sharing Stories from 1977" project documents and preserves the stories of National Women's Conference participants through biographies, oral histories, demographic mapping, and interpretive essays.
