The Taguchi method is applied to the turbidimetric determination of sulfate in water to improve the sensitivity of the determination and to show the applicability of the Taguchi method to analytical chemical problems. Fifteen control (experimental) factors are examined using an LI6 orthogonal design, called the inner array. Replicates at each factor combination of the inner array are obtained by varying three environmental (noise) factors according to a one-half fractional two-level three-factor factorial design, the outer array. The signal and the noise responses are combined into a third response, the signal-to-noise ratio. All three responses are used to determine factor effects. Factor J, the type of acid added to the conditioning reagent, appears to be the most important factor among the experimental factors. In addition, the environmental factor a, the type of stirring rod used to stir the solution is found to be the most significant among the environmental factors. Verification experiments at optimal factor combinations show that the signal can be improved and predicted; the noise, however, is difficult to predict.
