Abstract
Stroke survivors have a high fall risk. Impaired balance control is important factor contributing to falls in these patients. Current interventions are less effective. This is mostly because we do not understand all the factors that contribute to poor balance control. The reorganization of the brain that occurs after stroke may affect balance control. We hypothesize that the altered communication between the brain areas that occurs after stroke is responsible for impaired balance control. We assessed the brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG), the muscle activity using electromyography (EMG), and balance performance using clinical and laboratory-based measures.
