dc.description.abstractBetween 1956 and 1960, the Allan Hancock Foundation, University of Southern California, conducted an oceanographic survey in order to determine the 'natural environmental characteristics of the continental shelf area of southern California.' A total of 1,498 stations were occupied in the area from Point Conception to the Mexican border and extending seaward to the 100 meter contour. Several of the stations were located at depths greater than 100 m. Stations were chosen at 1.25 km intervals and one or more of the following data were collected at each station: depth, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, water density, water transparency, phosphate, silicate, water and sediment pH, median diameter and sorting coefficients of the sediment, percent calcium carbonate, percent organic nitrogen, sediment type, plankton tows, and grab samples. Each area was sampled several times a year, but not all areas were sampled during the same cruise, with two exceptions, October, 1959, and April, 1960, when the entire study area was sampled. [...]
