Item Relationships among absences, performance and attendance for satisfied and dissatisfied employees(1983) Beiting, Mark W.; Pritchard, Robert D.; Ivancevich, John M.; Maxwell, Scott E.; Osburn, Hobart G.This study examines the influence of work satisfaction on absenteeism. It postulates a positive influence of job content on work satisfaction and a negative influence of these two variables on absenteeism. It proposes that attending work which is dissatisfying can lead to task avoidance and result in lower performance. Conversely, it proposes that frequent absences from dissatisfying work can lead to increased performance by reducing task avoidance among dissatisfied employees. These hypotheses were field-tested in two departments of a large credit card center. The hypotheses were generally not supported. The predicted positive relationship between job content and work satisfaction was found. However, the predicted negative relationship between these variables and absenteeism only emerged for employees with low growth needs. The performance effects predicted for employees dissatisfied with the work generally were not found.
