Item Converting Your e-Resource Records to RDA(2014-05-03) Guajardo, RichardWhy wait? Convert your e-resource bibliographic records to RDA enhanced records. Library vendors can automate the RDA enhancement of your existing catalog records. In-house options are also available. The Library of Congress has updated thousands of authority records to RDA headings. Combine your RDA project with authority control processing to maximize your effort. Some additional steps for the project may include use of the ILS global update functions and load table profiles.Item Developing Best Practices for Implementing a Web-Scale Discovery System(2014-11-18) Brett, Kelsey; Guajardo, Richard; Young, FrederickThis presentation outlines best practices for discovery systems implementations based off of the experience of implementing multiple discovery systems at University of Houston.Item The impact of Discovery Systems on Libraries' Organizational Structures and Staffing(2017-04-03) Brett, Kelsey; Young, Frederick; Guajardo, RichardAs libraries adopt new technologies, it is important to consider how and by whom they will be managed and incorporated into existing organizational structures. This presentation will cover the preliminary results of widely distributed survey about how the adoption of discovery systems impact the organization and personnel of academic libraries.Item Navigating the Primo Resource Type Jungle: Connecting Resource Types to RDA and Local Collections(2016-05-04) Guajardo, Richard; Young, FrederickAt the University of Houston our decision for the use of resources types in our Primo discovery system were influenced by two local projects. Prior to implementing Primo, our library completed an RDA Enhancement project allowed us to better categorize library material types using RDA elements for content type, carrier type, and media type. We wanted to make use of this work to provide some continuity between the OPAC and the discovery platform. Meanwhile our Digital Library was working to revamp the dc:format-medium field so that digital objects are categorized more consistently and accurately. We will discuss our RDA Enhancement project, as well as how it and our digital collections influenced how we use Primo's default resource types and develop custom resource types.Item RDA Is Here: Full Scale Implementation of RDA at UH System Libraries(2014-02-20) Guajardo, Richard; Wu, AnnieThe national libraries of United States started their implementation of RDA on March 31, 2013. University of Houston Libraries decided to take action to ensure a simultaneous implementation of the new resource description standard. Besides incorporating new RDA records into our system, UH Libraries planned to achieve a major goal of retrospectively converting it's existing AACR bibliographic records into RDA records. UH Libraries and three other UH Campus Libraries share the same ILS system. They established a RDA Implementation Task Force with representatives from each of the campus libraries. This presentation will cover their RDA implementation process in systems configuration, vendor collaboration, local policy creation, training, and communication. The presentation will also share the short-term and long-term benefits, challenges, and lessons learned from their RDA implementation.Item Rediscover Discovery: Evaluating Web‐Scale Discovery Platforms(2013-03-19) Guajardo, Richard; Wu, AnnieIn 2012, the University of Houston Libraries conducted an extensive evaluation process of the major library web-scale discovery platforms in the marketplace. The methodology included evaluation of vendor demonstrations, selection of uniform and targeted questions for vendor responses, development of a ranking and weighting formula for vendor responses, and analysis. A major effort was initiated to collect feedback from public services librarians including a survey of impressions about the current/existing discovery platform, and an open forum discussion with a survey for thoughts on next steps. As part of the process a one day library discovery platform conference was held with a keynote speaker, panel discussions, vendor demonstrations, and round table discussions. Data collected from all of these activities was analyzed and key findings were categorized for decision-making. A statement of findings was prepared for each vendor under consideration. This project was undertaken consortially to streamline and centralize the data gathering effort and to maximize input and feedback from representative institutions. Each institution was able to draw information from the same data pool, but was free to customize findings for their own decision-making. This presentation outlines the evaluation process and findings that will greatly enhance the participant's knowledge of web-scale discovery platforms. The methodology developed can be repurposed and reused for efficient evaluation of discovery platforms at other institutions.Item Web-Scale Discovery: Post Implementation(2012-04-20) Vacek, Rachel; Guajardo, RichardDiscovery services provide users a single search box to access a library’s entire preindexed collection. Representatives from two academic libraries serving different user populations will discuss marketing, instructing users, evaluating the product, and maintaining the resource after a discovery service is implemented.
