Item The effects of participation in a group to eliminate self-defeating behaviors on self-concept and locus of control of learning disabled adolescents(1984) Abrams, Barbara Claire; Omizo, Michael M.; Cubberly, Walter E.; Munson, Carlton E.; Radabaugh, Douglas B.This study investigated the effects of participation by learning disabled adolescents in a group experience designed to eliminate self-defeating behaviors and feelings. The dependent variables examined were (1) self-concept, measured by the Dimensions of Self-Concept (DOSC) and (2) locus of control measured by the Nowicki-Strick1 and Scale. Sixty learning disabled adolescents were randomly assigned to experimental (n=30) or control (n=30) conditions. The experimental group participated in a group designed to eliminate self-defeating behaviors and feelings for seven sessions. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANGOVA) procedures were used to analyze posttest selfconcept and locus of control scores for the experimental and control groups, after adjusting for preexisting individual differences, to determine if changes between the pretest and the posttest for the experimental group were the same or different from changes for the control group. The multivariate Wilks's Lambda results (.15513; F=38.12; p <.001) were significant. To determine which variables accounted for the greatest amount of between group variance, PC.S.L hoc univariate £ and discriminant analysis procedures were conducted. Results revealed that Level of Aspiration (p < .001), Anxiety (p < .001), Academic Interest and Satisfaction (p < .05), Leadership and Initiative (p < .01), Identification vs. Alienation (p < .05) and Locus of Control (p < .001) measures were valid discriminators. The hypotheses were supported. The results of the study suggest that a group intervention designed to teach the skills needed to eliminate self-defeating behaviors or feelings is an appropriate choice to impact self-concept and locus of control orientation of learning disabled adolescents.
