Item Foreign policy and domestic politics : Lyndon Baines Johnson's view of the Middle East(1984) Ables, Gisela R.; Egan, Clifford L.; Quataert, Donald G.; Curry, Lawrence H., Jr.; Razi, Gholam HosseinThis study began as an attempt to understand and illuminate Lyndon Baines Johnson's Middle East policy. Using primary documents in the Lyndon B. Johnson Library in Austin, Texas along with other sources this researcher set out to establish both the substance and motivation of this policy. The study concludes that Johnson did not have a clearly defined Middle East policy and instead used the conflict in that region for his own domestic political ends. The work also reveals that Johnson attempted to gain more favorable publicity for the Vietnam war by using the Middle East policy maneuvers. Policy decisions during the Johnson Administration were usually influenced or even made by advisors close to the president and little attention was given to the State Department experts or ambassadors, even those who reported directly to Johnson from the Middle East. Little pretence of an evenhanded Middle East policy is found. His administration came down squarely on the side of Israel by greatly increasing their weaponry and upping financial and research aid to that small nation.
