This study examines Palestinian analysis of, and responses to, United States imperialism on the basis of research in Arabic. The inquiry is organized around several key US interventions in West Asia immediately following World War Two, namely the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP), the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the 1954 Baghdad Pact, the 1955 Johnston Plan, the 1957 Eisenhower Doctrine, the 1967 June War, and the 1970 Rogers Plan. The choice of focusing on these specific eruptions of US power comes directly from the Palestinian sources themselves: that is, these are the US programs with which Palestinian political life was concerned, as reflected in newspapers and internal political documents. This method allows for the illumination of two symbiotic historic processes at once: on one side, the layered expansion of US military and trade projects in the Arab region, and on the other side, the transformations of Palestinian political life over the course of three decades, from nationalist diplomacy to revolutionary Marxism. Thus, what unfolds is simultaneously a history of the US in the Arab region through Palestinian eyes and a history of the Palestinian revolution organized around the theme of the US.
