Home care has been driven by three primary trends: an individual's preference to remain in his or her own home for as long as possible, advancements in medicine and technology which support complex care at home, and a political interest in deinstitutionalization with the goal of containing health care costs (Kaye, Chapman, Newcomer, & Harrington, 2006; Stone, 2004). The Bureau of Labor Statistics (2007) projects that between 2006 to 2016, the demand for home care workers will grow by 50.6%.
