Item A distributed file system in a Unix network environment(1985) Chen, Ing-Ray; Bastani, Farokh B.; Bahaa-El-Din, Wael; Tucker, Charles T., IIIThe design objective of our distributed file system is to develop a location-transparent network-wide file service within the framework of the AT&T UNIX hardware and software architecture. The file system consists of a set of servers and clients communicating through the AT&T 3BNET facilities. For reliability reasons, the information about network files is fully duplicated among the servers with distributed control. "Two-phase commit" and "Time-stamp ordering" techniques are used for maintaining the file system in a consistent state. A design of the directory server using foreground-background processes is presented, and the experimental measurement of its performance is compared with an alternative technique based on "on-the-fly" maintenance.Item Simulation of packed gas absorption columns with first order irreversible reactions(1983) Chen, Ing-Ray; Henley, Ernest J.; Pollard, Richard; Tucker, Charles T.Gas absorption in packed towers has been modelled taking into account heat effects and first order irreversible chemical reactions. A theory based on the film factor concept was developed using steady state assumptions. The theory was transformed into a computer program which simulates the start-up procedure of the column dynamically and shows good convergence behavior. The computer program was tested with a pseudo-first order case, NaOH-CO2-Air, and good agreement with experimental data [21] was obtained.
