A system equation is derived to evaluate the performance objectives. Criteria for analysis of the transmitting and receiving elements are developed. Acoustical transmitting and receiving transducers which are candidates for use in the system are examined in detail. Couplers are studied for impedance transforming properties which improve the transducer performance as appropriate. Devices and techniques for forming ideal beampatterns are treated with emphasis on plane arrays. Shielding by barriers is discussed.
