Mathematics has made giant strides, particularly in topology, due to Professor Moore and his descendants. Also, Professor Moore introduced and perpetuated a Socratic style of teaching which has been used, sometimes with personal variations, by many of his mathematical descendants. This paper is a partial assessment of Dr. Moore’s influence on American mathematicians. Mathematicians who have studied under Professor Moore and their mathematical descendants plus mathematical results published by these mathematicians are the bases used in this evaluation. Conclusions have been drawn, with comparison to national surveys when possible.application/pdfenThis item is protected by copyright but is made available here under a claim of fair use (17 U.S.C. §107) for non-profit research and educational purposes.
