Henry James's short stories of writers and artists consistently substantiate his basic philosophy that the genuine artist must exhibit a special kind, of detachment in order to produce a work of art. Ideally, this detachment enables the artist to experience life through conscious observation rather than by active participation, to maintain his integrity, and to channel his potential into artistic accomplishments.
