Abstract

Greater engagement with social media sites such as Facebook has been found to increase college students' perceptions of sexual norms by exposing them to content suggesting greater approval of risky sexual behavior than they have previously encountered (Young & Jordan, 2013). The aims of the present study were to examine whether other students are more influenced by social media and dating apps to participate in sexual activity than the participants themselves are, and to examine which platforms (social media or dating apps) are more influential. Results showed that participants who use social media assumed that others are more influenced by social media to participate in sexual activity than they themselves are, participants who use dating apps assumed that others are more influenced by dating apps to participate in sexual activity than they themselves are, and no difference in perceived influence on dating apps compared to social media was found.
