Abstract
An analysis and comparison of five keyboard, fugues of different periods and styles proves that fugue is a combination of formal and liberal procedures. The fugues analyzed and compared are representative of the Baroque, the Classic, the Romantic, and mid-twentieth styles. The comparison of these styles, as represented by the five keyboard fugues, demonstrates that fugue is a somewhat romantically oriented concept of the development of musical material.
