Abstract

Purpose. The primary concern of this study was to identify the work motivation need system of black female workers. The major purpose of this study was to determine whether a significant relationship exists between black female workers' needs and work values and specific demographic characteristics. Procedures. The design of this study provided for the comparison of classification groups of black female workers based on occupational level, age range, marital status, and educational level. The random sample selected to participate in this study consisted of 285 black female workers. The Work Motivation Inventory was used to assess the black female workers' needs and work values. The five scales from the research instrument were analyzed to determine whether significant differences in group means exist among the classification groups for each demographic characteristic. The analysis of variance procedure permitted the examination of mean scale scores among the classification groups for each demographic characteristic. Differences between two specific classification group means were tested for significance using the t-test. The hypotheses of no significant differences among the classification groups on each of the five scales of the Work Motivation Inventory were tested at the .05 level. [...] Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were reached: (1) black female workers at varying age levels have significantly different needs and values in the work situation; (2) black female workers at varying occupational levels in this study have significantly different needs and values in the work situation; (3) black female workers at varying educational levels in this study have significantly different needs and values in the work situation; and (4) marital status in this study of black female workers does not differentiate the subjects in terms of their needs and values in the work situation.
