Abstract
To be of any practical value, the principles and goals of education must be translated into research-supported teaching and schooling practices. There is an assumption regarding teaching which forms the basis for many of the specific teaching strategies encouraged in today's education. The assumption is that providing relationships and environmental conditions conducive to reciprocal personal awareness and understanding will facilitate student learning (Stanford and Roark, 1974). This view of teaching is based to a large extent on phenomenological psychology (Combs, Avila and Purkey, 1971; Combs and Snygg, 1959; Rogers, 1969).
