Abstract

The string quartet was the chief type of instrumental chamber music composed during the Classic era. During the preceding Baroque era, the trio sonata had been the favorite type of chamber music. The purpose of this paper is to trace the changes in instrumental composition which took place between the peaks of these two great eras - gradual changes which eventually saw the triumph of one of these forms and the complete extinction of the other.
