Abstract

This thesis examines a synthesis of alienation literature on the (1) human existence approach (2) the psychological states approach, and the (3) social processes approach. The framework is critical with the aim of showing alienation study in modern sociology as generally ambigious and misguided. A defense of the Marxian concept of alienatiop and it's humanist character is developed. Finally, the psychological orientation in modern sociology is criticized as being neither realistic nor humanist in the Marxian tradition.
