Methodology for the optimal selection of offshore drilling vessels

The purpose of this research was to develop a methodology for selecting among existing systems subject to variable operating cycles and to apply it to the selection of offshore drilling vessels. The methodology developed was based on previous work by Asimow and Ostrofsky. The application to the offshore drilling vessel selection problem is the major part of this research. This work is supported by an in depth working knowledge of the offshore drilling vessel industry using current mathematical modeling techniques. To illustrate the capabilities of the methodology nine typical drilling vessels were analyzed for a twelve well, three location, twenty-four month drilling program. The suitability of the nine vessels for this hypothetical drilling program is evaluated and discussed.
