Abstract

A method for treating non-isolated systems in quantum mechanics in terms of normal operators is presented. The techniques of the measurement process and the effects of non-isolated systems are discussed. A brief discourse on linear operators, emphasizing normal operators, leads to the axiomatic basis of the quantum theory in terms of normal operators and some general physical consequences. Applications to two-state systems and a system described by use of a complex potential in the hamiltonian are discussed.
