In coherent optical matched filtering and correlation, the Fourier transform properties of lenses are used. It is the purpose of this project to design a Fourier transform lens system with performance as required for the optical processing of physiological signals. Symmetrical Fourier transform lenses are commercially available, but besides being expensive, they are generally limited to a smaller aperture and smaller field angle range than could be obtained with an asymmetrical design. The work described here has therefore been addressed to the design of a four-element asymmetrical Fourier transform lens system. The powers, spacings, and shape factors of the lens system are adjusted to meet the requirements for Fourier transformation, aberration control, resolution and object pupil size. A special automatic lens design program is developed to achieve the design goal.
