Abstract
A study of terrorism as a modern political phenomenon. The nature of terrorism is analyzed and observations are offered as to its tactics, goals, and claims to legitimacy. Its philosophical basis, as derived from the writings of Marcuse, Chomsky, Fanon, Debray, and Marighella, is presented. The personal background and motivations of some of its practitioners are discussed, with particular attention being devoted to the involvement of such groups as the Weathermen in terroristic movements. Lastly, the future potential of terrorism, and the possible threat it represents to democratic institutions, is discussed.
