Abstract

Statistical estimation techniques are applied to the problem of particle counting and sorting by measurements of light scattering. Emphasis is directed to the evaluation of both statistical and instrumental errors in the approach. Means to improve the estimation are derived. Photoelectron counting statistics are used to infer irradiance data, which are found to be especially convenient for dealing with moving scatterers.
