Abstract
Epictetus, the great Stoic teacher of the last half of the first century and first quarter of the second century of the Christian era, was a brilliant expositor of the ethics of Stoicism. Although Epictetus wrote nothing, his words have been preserved for us by his pupil, Flavius Arrian, who recorded in almost stenographic form the lectures of Epictetus, which have been published as The Discourses of Epictetus. Arrian's work lacked organization, and Epictetus's significant comments on education were scattered throughout the text. Histories of education, although they have treated Stoicism generally, have mentioned Epictetus only cursorily.
