Abstract
In this thesis the similarity which exists between the behavior of a system that includes a resiliently mounted dry-friction damper and that of a bilinear hysteretic system is studied analytically and experimentally. The selected approach, the Kryloff-Bogoliuboff method of slowly varying parameters, furnishes an approximate solution of the problem by assuming a linear solution in polar form. The analytical results are presented in the form of 1. amplitude spectra, 2. transmissibility spectra, and 3. a family of curves of maximum-transmissibility vs damping-parameter, a separate curve for each value of the stiffness parameter. These spectra are compared with data obtained from a series of experiments.
