Abstract
One of the major components of professionalism in medicine is held to be service orientation. This concept has, for the most part, remained unexplored by those who study medicine as a profession. There is lack of agreement as to what constitutes service orientation how it is to be defined and measured. While this thesis docs not propose to resolve this difficulty, it does try to gain some insight, and in this endeavor it investigates student physicians' concepts of service orientation and the way in which those concepts may develop during the process of medical education.
