The preparation and solid-state photolysis of potassium tris(malonato)cobaltate (III) 3-hudrate

Several methods for the preparation of potassium tris(malonato)-cobaltate(III) 3-hydrate are discussed and the necessary conditions for the synthesis of pure K[lowered 3][Co(Mal)[lowered 3]][dot]H[lowered 2]O are outlined. Investigation of the solid-state photodecomposition, using mass spectrometric, infra-red, and reflectance techniques, is discussed in an attempt to determine the products of the photodecomposition reaction. A mechanism is proposed to account for the stoichiometry of the gaseous photoproducts.
