Abstract

This paper describes the use of a beat frequency osoiHator for measuring the change of blood, flow in an artery. The beat frequency oscillator was chosen because it has been successfully used to detect dielectric changes in chemical mixtures. This paper shows how the beat frequency oscillator say be used to detect and measure volume change in a tube which has elastic properties. The periodic change along an artery is a function of the heart beat, the magnitude of the change in volume being proportional to the pressure which is exerted on the system due to the heart beat and the pressure which is exerted on the system due to the elastic properties' of the arteries. The design of a cylindrical capacitor cell to be used as a cuff around an artery .and to be incorporated as a part of the tank circuit of the beat frequency oscillator is given along with the mathematical solution of the capacitance of the cell.
