Abstract

The effects of bandlimiting on the performance of coded and uncoded communication systems corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise are analyzed. Results for both sample and matched filter detection are presented for the cases of no bandlimiting, bandlimiting by an ideal filter, and bandlimiting by a physical filter. It is found that the intersymbol interference induced by bandlimiting can degrade the performance of coded systems to the point where their performance is worse than that of uncoded systems.
