Abstract

The interdependence of the variables (real power, reactive power, voltage, and torque angle) at any bus has been called driving point characteristic, and the function relating the variables at buses has been referred to as the transfer characteristic. The geometrical representations for a two bus system are circles for driving point characteristics, and ellipses for transfer characteristics. These graphical representations of the characteristics yield directly the maximum power that can be received with a fixed sending end voltage, the optimal dispatch for a transmission line, the incremental power loss in the transmission line, and the limits of stability as well as a range of torque angles for stable operations. The transfer characteristics for a three bus system are described by surfaces, and are useful in minimization of the losses in the transmission lines.
