Abstract

The surface notch toughness of 63 mil thick titanium 6Al-4V alloy sheet for cryogenic applications was determined at -320° F. The tensile strength of this alloy is higher at -320° F than at room temperature. The material is more sensitive to the presence of a surface flaw at boiling liquid nitrogen temperature than at room temperature. The test results show that higher conventional stress intensity factors are obtained when the ratio of crack depth to the thickness of specimen is smaller.
