Abstract

Purpose of the Study. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of institutionally-provided peer tutoring on student academic achievement/graduation and retention/persistence at a four year, open admissions university having a preponderance of minority ethnic (Hispanic) students. The studied university accepts all students having an accredited high school diploma or a General Education Development Certificate into its undergraduate programs. A six-year longitudinal study of a beginning freshman class was made to determine the existence of a statistically significant relationship between tutoring and student academic achievement/graduation and retention/persistence.
