Abstract
This thesis endeavors (1) to outline the history of Hempstead and the formation of Waller County, Texas; (2) to provide a history of Saint Bartholomew's Episcopal Church; (3) to show the effect upon the parish of the Oxford Movement of 1833 and its subsequent development into the Anglo-Catholic Revival; (4) to give biographical data concerning the clergymen who have served this parish; and (5) to recover the record of official acts done in the parish from 1858 until 25 April 1886. A remarkable absence of parochial primary sources has forced reliance upon the Journals of the Diocese of Texas and other diocesan publications for information. Secular newspapers, primarily of Hempstead and Houston, Texas, as well as leading church journals have been consulted for the period, 1858-1886. For biographical data on the clergymen, the Journals and other publications of various Dioceses and Missionary Districts have been consulted, as have been also the available parish histories of other churches served by these same clergymen. Correspondence with the incumbents of some parishes formerly served by these clergymen and with some diocesan Historiographers has been helpful in gathering information. Unpublished sources, such as Parish Registers, Vestry Minutes, and in one case, a private journal, have been used. [...]
