Abstract

The purpose of this thesis has been to establish the fact that gifted translators use the same techniques that other great artists of the same period use. This thesis is based on Richmond Lattimore's statement that the simile is the element which shows most clearly "the escape of the individual," the "unique, non-standardized" elements that the translator contributes from his own style. What has been of importance to the thesis has been the discovery of the constants and variations in the similes. After the recurring elements in the various translations were discovered, then the variations in form and matter were compared to the form and matter of certain works of writers contemporaneous with the translators.
