Abstract

The syntheses of glycerol, glycerophosphates, acylglycerols, and phosphatidic acids under presumed primitive Earth conditions was demonstrated. The abiotic synthesis of glycerol was accomplished by reduction of glyceraldehyde with H2S gas at 85[degrees]. The product was identified by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS), and by its conversion to glycerophosphate when incubated with glycerol kinase and 32P adenosine triphosphate. Glycerophosphates were synthesized via a reaction between ammonium phosphate and glycerol catalyzed by urea or cyanamide.
