dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate the acquisition of grammatical morphemes by young second language learners of English to assess how well the creative construction conceptualization predicted child second language acquisition. First, the study sought to identify whether there was an identifiable order in which morphemes were acquired by second language learners. Secondly, the study sought to identify whether there was similarity in the acquisition order of grammatical morphemes of second language learners and the order of preschool children who were native speakers. Two hypotheses were stated: Hypothesis I: The rank order of acquisition of English verb inflections is the same for preschool native Spanish-speaking children. Hypothesis II: The rank order of acquisition of English verb inflections for preschool native Spanish-speaking children is the same as the rank order of acquisition of English verb inflections for preschool native speakers. The subjects were four preschool native Spanishspeaking children in the process of acquiring English as their second language. The two females, Rosa and Maria, and two males, Raul and Geraldo, were 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years of age, born in Mexico and of lower socioeconomic status.
