Abstract

The English contributions to music between the time of the Elizabethan composers and the rise of Purcell were not great. There was a good deal of musical development during this time, however, and a significant period which has not been closely analyzed is the Commonwealth (1649-1660). This paper examines the musical activities, the compositions, and the people who brought about the developments in English music during the Commonwealth.
