Abstract

Timoshenko suggested an analytical formula to determine the tip deflection of a spur gear tooth, when loaded at the tip. The assumptions on which this formula is based seem to limit the scope of this formula. One such assumption is that the tooth is regarded as a long cantilever." In this thesis, the validity of the "long cantilever" assumption is shown for any 20-degree full depth tooth of a gear having less than or equal to 72 teeth. An attempt is also made to show the significance of the part of deflection, due to warping of the fixed end cross section. Lastly, based on the experimental results an experimentally modified relation is proposed to evaluate the tooth deflection at and along the load. This relation may only be used to determine the deflections of a 20-degree full depth tooth of a gear having 72 teeth.
